From October 12 to 14, 2009, the Japan Foundation hosted "Global Japanese Studies Scholars Forum 2009" in Hakone by inviting 16 scholars from 12 countries. These scholars playing important roles in major countries and regions were invited to discuss a wide variety of issues that Japanese studies scholars and institutions around the world are facing due to the significant changes in contents and roles of Japanese studies abroad. To summarize closed discussions held in Hakone, a public symposium entitled "Global Japanese Studies Scholars Forum - Changing Japanese Studies: Reports from the World" was held at the Japan Foundation headquarters on October 15. The moderator was Professor Toru Haga, President Emeritus of the Kyoto University of Art and Design, and the commentator was Mr. Akio Nomura, the President of Asahi Institute of Journalism.

The Japan Foundation has been operating the Japanese-Language Institute, Urawa as an organization specialized in offering training for non-native teachers of the Japanese-language and producing Japanese-language educational materials and teaching resources. Since its establishement in July 1989, the institute has been active in Saitama City (formerly Urawa City), Saitama Prefecture for two decades.

The Japan Cultural Institute in Paris (Maison de la Culture du Japon a Paris: MCJP) has been hosting annual two-week Japanese contemporary dance performance entitled "J-dance".

Co-organized with the Japan Society and the Japan Foundation, an international symposium titled "Japanese Art in America: Building the Next Generation" was held on March 16th, 2009 in New York at the Japan Society.

On August 19 to 20, 2009, the Japan Foundation, Kuala Lumpur (JFKL) hosted a contemporary dance performance "We're Gonna Go Dancing!" with co-organizers Akademi Seni Budaya dan Warisan Kebangsaan (ASWARA), Japan Contemporary Dance Network (JCDN), and Embassy of Japan in Malaysia.
