Every year since 1973, the Japan Foundation has presented the Japan Foundation Awards to individuals and organizations that have made significant contributions to promoting international mutual understanding and friendship between Japan and other countries through academic, artistic and other cultural pursuits.
The awardees for this year are actor and performing artist Robert Lepage, the Korean Japanese Association, which has promoted academic, cultural, and youth exchange between Japan and Korea, and journalist and poet Goenawan Mohamad.
Cross-border exchange between people and cultures was difficult during the Covid-19 pandemic, but the situation is gradually getting better.
In spite of this difficult situation, there are those who have continued to work for exchange between people and shared their thoughts and experiences to build bridges across mutual differences.
In Special Feature 78, we report on award ceremony for the 2022 Japan Foundation Awards, which marked the 50th anniversary since their establishment, and on the commemorative lecture by each recipient. We hope you enjoy the attractive words of these recipients who have continued to serve as bridges between people and cultures in the various areas of the performing arts, youth education, and expression of thoughts.
