On September 11 and 12, 2009, The Japan Foundation and Centre Europeen d'Etudes Japonaises d'Alsace (CEEJA) co-organized the seminar described in the title of this article at CEEJA in Kientzheim which is located in Alsace region in France adjacent to Germany.

On Sunday, July 5, 2009, the Japanese-Language Proficiency Test (JLPT) took place. It is a test to evaluate and certify the language proficiency of primarily non-native speakers of Japanese. The Japan Foundation has been administrating JLPT outside Japan with cooperation of local institutions. (The administrator of JLPT in Japan is Japan Educational Exchanges and Services, and in Taiwan is Interchange Association, Japan.)

Last year, in 2008, the Japan Cultural Institute in Rome hosted many events related to the millennium of the Tale of Genji. This year, under the theme of "Pop Culture", the Institute is organizing a variety of events to introduce both contemporary and traditional cultures of Japan.
